The location of the Expert Workshop is Zagreb, the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Croatia. In 2011 its population was almost 793,000. It is in the Northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain and lies at an elevation of approximately 122 m above sea level.

The climate is classified as an oceanic climate, near the boundary of the humid continental climate. The average daily temperature in November is 6 grad C. Zagreb lies in the Central European Time zone (GMT+1),

Zagreb is the seat of the central government, administrative bodies and almost all government ministries. Almost all of the largest Croatian companies, media and scientific institutions have their headquarters in the city. Zagreb area is the centre of the road, rail and air networks of Croatia. It is a city known for its diverse economy, high quality of living, museums, sporting and entertainment events. Its main branches of economy are high-tech industries and the service sector.

The Expert Workshop on the NUCLEAR BACK END issues is held at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER), University of Zagreb. It is the largest technical faculty and the leading educational as well as research-and-development institution in the fields of electrical engineering and computing in Croatia.

FER owns four buildings situated in the Zagreb. As of 2011, the it employs more than 160 professors and 210 teaching and research assistants. In the academic year 2010/2011, the total number of students was about 3,800 in the undergraduate and graduate level, and about 450 in the PhD program.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering (ETF) was formed on 1 July 1956 when the College of Engineering of the University of Zagreb was divided into ETF and three other new faculties. The faculty existed under this name until 7 February 1995 when it was renamed to its current name.
